One Large Desk Mat or Separate Pads for a Split Keyboard?

Conceptual overhead split-keyboard layout with a gap between halves and a separate trackball zone; dimensions are illustrative.

One Large Desk Mat or Separate Pads for a Split Keyboard?

Compare one extended desk mat with separate pads for a split keyboard. Check tenting supports, separation, trackball placement and the full equipment footprint.

Choose one large desk mat when both keyboard halves, their supports and your pointing device fit on a stable, fully supported surface. Separate pads can make more sense when the halves sit far apart, you want different surfaces, or you need clear desktop between them. The right footprint comes from your actual split-keyboard arrangement, including tenting accessories.

A keyboard's two halves do not have to share one mat. Work out the positions you want to use before deciding which parts of the desk to cover.

Set the keyboard up before drawing a mat outline

Place the halves at your preferred separation and angle. Fit the tenting hardware or stands you actually use, following the keyboard maker's instructions. Include cable connectors, the connecting cable and any wrist rests in the arrangement.

For example, ZSA's Voyager information describes a split keyboard with its own physical configuration and accessories. That model is one reference point, not a standard footprint for every split board. Different cases, feet and support systems need measuring separately.

Try normal typing and pointing-device movements. If a support wobbles, a cable pulls taut or one foot sits on a height transition, fix the arrangement before treating it as ready to measure.

Measure the outer footprint, including the gaps

Measure from the outside of the leftmost support to the outside of the rightmost device. A gap between the keyboard halves still contributes to the width that a single continuous mat must span. Check depth from the nearest support to the farthest item that needs to sit on the mat.

As an illustrative planning exercise, two 7-inch-wide halves, an 8-inch gap and a 7-inch pointing-device zone total 29 inches across. That leaves 2.5 inches within a nominal 31.5-inch mat width. It does not prove the layout fits: rotated halves, cable exits, rests and depth can increase the required footprint. Substitute your measured bounding rectangles for these example numbers.

Use the size guide to compare the resulting outline with PrintMyPad's listed 36 × 16-inch and 31.5 × 13.8-inch options. Neither option provides a custom cutout or a guarantee of compatibility with a particular support system.

Compare three surface arrangements

Arrangement When to consider it What to check
One extended mat beneath the whole layout You want a continuous visual field and the footprint fits Every support sits securely, with room for ordinary movement
Separate pads beneath the halves You want to leave the middle open or separate the surfaces Pad edges do not leave one support partly raised
A keyboard area plus a separate pointing surface You already have a mouse pad or trackball position you prefer The extra surface does not crowd the working area

A large mat is not automatically better because it spans the equipment. Separate pads are not automatically more stable either. Test the actual bases and surfaces without assuming the material label determines the result.

Leave the pointing device where it works for you

A mouse needs movement space, not just room for its body. A trackball may stay in one place, but your hand still needs access to its ball and buttons. Put the device in the intended position and use it before measuring around it.

If the pointing device sits between the halves, check that its cables and your hand do not obstruct the connecting cable. If it sits outside them, include that extra width. A left-side arrangement should be planned from that side, rather than copied from a standard product photograph.

Our desk mat versus mouse pad comparison covers the wider format choice. Keep an existing specialist surface if it remains important to your routine.

Place the artwork around two covered areas

Two keyboard halves interrupt an image differently from one rectangular keyboard. A subject in the centre may remain visible, while details near both front corners might disappear. Make two separate overlays on a copy of the design and add the pointing-device footprint.

A landscape, border or repeating pattern can work without requiring a face to sit in one particular place. For original artwork, use the custom design guide to prepare the composition after the equipment positions are settled.

PrintMyPad offers printed polyester-surface mats with rubber backing and stitched edges. When one of the available sizes suits the complete arrangement, browse current designs or upload an original composition. Choose the surface for the layout you actually use, rather than moving the keyboard merely to fit the picture.
