A desk mat can fit in front of or beside monitor-arm and microphone clamps when a fully supported rectangle remains for it. Measure from the parts of the mount that actually occupy the desktop, including reinforcement plates, rather than from the desk's outside edge. Follow the mount's instructions for its contact surfaces and installation.
Do not assume a fabric mat can sit beneath a loaded clamp. The layout approach in this guide leaves mounting and load-bearing requirements to the hardware maker and checks whether an unmodified mat fits around that approved installation.
Map the whole mount footprint
With the hardware installed according to its instructions, look at the desk from above and below. Identify the top contact area, any reinforcement plate, the lower clamp and the space needed to reach adjustment controls. Include cable exits and any under-desk cable tray that affects access.
A rear-mounted arm can have a small visible post but a much larger base plate. A side-mounted microphone arm may occupy the same area your mouse hand uses. Measure the real assembly rather than drawing a circle around the post alone.
| Part of the installation | What to record |
|---|---|
| Top contact plate | Width and depth occupying the desktop |
| Added reinforcement plate | Its full outline, not only the clamp above it |
| Adjustment hardware | Access needed for the maker's specified procedure |
| Cables and moving arm | The route through the positions you actually use |
Draw the remaining clear rectangle
Place the keyboard and mouse after mapping the mounts. Measure the clear area that remains for the mat. A clamp on one corner can prevent a rectangular mat from sitting flat even when most of the desktop is open.
For an illustrative example, a 20-inch-deep clear desktop area with a plate extending 5 inches forward leaves 15 inches in front of that plate. A 16-inch-deep mat would not fit entirely in that strip; a nominal 13.8-inch depth leaves 1.2 inches before accounting for placement and other equipment. This is arithmetic using hypothetical measurements, not a fit result for a particular arm.
PrintMyPad's custom builder lists 36 × 16 inches and 31.5 × 13.8 inches. Use the size guide to check the complete width and depth. A mat moved to one side still needs full support and a usable mouse area.
Try placement changes before changing the hardware
An off-centre mat may work well if the keyboard and mouse can remain in their normal positions. A smaller available format may leave more clearance. Keeping a separate mouse pad is also reasonable when an extended mat would force the keyboard too close to the front edge.
Do not loosen a loaded arm or change its mounting position merely to improve a mockup. Any hardware change should follow the maker's procedure, including its requirements for supporting or removing equipment. Check desk compatibility, thickness and load limits in that documentation.
PrintMyPad's mats are finished rectangles with stitched edges. Do not assume custom cutouts, holes or a trimmed perimeter are available. Ask before ordering if a nonstandard outline is essential to the proposed arrangement.
Move the arm through its ordinary range
Test the positions you actually use: a microphone moved closer for a call, a display moved for drawing, or an arm folded away. Keep cables from dragging across the mouse zone or pulling against the mat edge. Check that the normal movement does not push another object into the clamp or off the desk.
A mat cannot make an incompatible mount or overloaded desk suitable. Once the hardware installation works, the remaining question is how much of the clear surface you want to cover.
Our desk mat versus mouse pad guide compares those coverage choices. For arrangements that change between work and gaming, use the mixed-use setup guide.
Plan the visible artwork last
Overlay the plate, keyboard and other permanent objects on a copy of the design. Move a focal subject away from the obscured corner rather than moving a mount to expose it. A repeating pattern or border can also be easier to position around equipment than one central face or logo.
If a listed rectangle fits the verified arrangement, browse current desk mat designs or prepare original artwork in the custom builder. For a close fit, ask PrintMyPad about the product dimensions before ordering, with your measured clear area and the required margin.
