For one desk used for work and gaming, arrange the equipment you use most in the main working position and give secondary devices a defined place. Reserve a continuous mouse area, keep ventilation and controls clear, and plan a simple transition between activities. A shared desk mat can connect the keyboard and mouse visually, but only if its full footprint fits.
Start by listing what changes between work and leisure. If only the computer changes, the layout may stay almost identical. If work needs paper, a second laptop or a drawing tablet, those items need real space rather than a promise to tidy them later.
Choose the arrangement around your equipment
| Situation | Main work area | Space to reserve |
|---|---|---|
| Desktop PC plus work laptop | Keyboard and mouse in front of the main display | A ventilated laptop position and access to its ports |
| Two laptops and one external keyboard | One active screen position with the other device to the side | Cable reach and a safe storage location for the inactive device |
| Work includes paper notes | Keyboard and mouse plus a clear writing area | A notebook footprint outside the main mouse sweep |
| Creative work adds a tablet or controller | A movable input-device zone | Clearance for hands, cables and controls during each activity |
Check hardware manuals before selecting a docking station, switching device or stand. A cable that fits a port does not establish that the device supports every display or charging function you need.
Draw the usable area at full size
Measure the area in front of monitor feet, lamp bases and permanently positioned speakers. Place paper outlines for the keyboard, mouse zone and any mat. Then position the actual equipment and try both tasks.
For an illustrative calculation, a 42-inch usable width leaves 6 inches outside a 36-inch-wide mat, or 10.5 inches outside a 31.5-inch-wide mat. Centering the mat divides that remainder between both sides. These are planning dimensions, not a recommendation that either layout leaves enough space for your own equipment.
Depth is just as important. PrintMyPad's listed options are 36 × 16 inches and 31.5 × 13.8 inches. A monitor foot extending into that depth can change the decision. The size guide shows how to measure around obstructions.
Keep the mouse zone continuous
Work through a normal movement, including the largest swipe you use while gaming. Do not place the laptop, mug or notebook in that area just because the desk looks tidier in a photograph. Left-handed users should mirror the layout around their actual mouse side rather than copying a right-handed example.
If you already use a specialist gaming mouse pad, preserve the surface you prefer. It can sit separately from decorative elements. The gaming surface guide explains why size and artwork do not establish a particular control or speed feel.
Plan the artwork around both activities
A quieter pattern may suit video calls and everyday work while still reflecting your interests. Alternatively, keep a favorite illustration and reduce visual clutter elsewhere. Place important details where the keyboard will not cover them.

This catalog print demonstrates a botanical direction without requiring a computer-themed design. For coordination with your display, use the wallpaper guide. If the whole room needs attention, start with grown-up gaming room ideas.
Build a two-minute transition routine
- Save work and follow your employer's device-security requirements.
- Return notebooks and work accessories to a dedicated tray or shelf.
- Move or close the inactive laptop without blocking ventilation on an active device.
- Restore the keyboard and mouse position you prefer for the next activity.
- Check that cables and headphone leads do not cross the mouse area.
Keep drinks away from electronics and put chargers somewhere they can be reached without pulling a device across the desk. If the desk must disappear completely at mealtimes, the small-space guide is a better starting point.
Does a desk mat solve an uncomfortable setup?
It changes the working surface and appearance, but it does not set your desk height, chair position or screen placement. Address the actual source of discomfort separately.
When the layout works, choose from existing designs or upload owned artwork in the custom builder.
