Choose a ready-made design when you already like the artwork and want to select it from a catalog. Choose custom printing when a particular photograph, logo, original illustration or personal idea is the point of the purchase. Neither route fixes a desk-space mismatch: measure before choosing either.
At PrintMyPad, ready-made refers to existing artwork you can select, not a promise that the mat is prepacked for immediate dispatch. Check the product page and current ordering information for the option you choose.
Compare the two buying routes
| Decision | Existing catalog artwork | Your own custom artwork |
|---|---|---|
| What you choose | A published design and available size | Your source image, composition and available size |
| Preparation | Review the listing and product images | Prepare a file and check crop, detail and permissions |
| Personal connection | Match an interest, palette or style | Use a meaningful photo, owned logo or original work |
| Main uncertainty | Whether the recipient likes the design | Whether the source file and composition suit a wide print |
| Before ordering | Verify dimensions and current terms | Verify those details plus the artwork workflow |
The materials do not automatically change because the artwork is custom. PrintMyPad's options use a printed polyester surface, stitched perimeter and rubber base. We do not offer a separate leather, felt or selectable-thickness custom range.
When an existing design is the better choice
Start with a catalog when the person has a recognizable visual preference but you do not have an appropriate image of your own. Someone with blue-and-white accessories may appreciate a coordinating print without needing their name or a photograph on it.
Look at the complete artwork, not only a cropped thumbnail. Identify the part a keyboard will cover and the colors that remain visible beside it. Our minimalist guide and nature design guide give concrete ways to make that choice.

When custom printing adds something meaningful
A photograph of the recipient's own car, a drawing they made, or original artwork tied to a shared memory can justify the extra preparation. Customization is less useful when it merely adds a name to a design the recipient would not otherwise choose.
Use the largest original file you have. A screenshot, compressed chat attachment or small profile picture may lose detail when printed large. Do not stretch a portrait sideways to fill the mat. Build a wider composition around it or ask for a file review. The design guide covers prompts, image preparation and realistic enhancement limits.
A simple three-situation comparison
For a friend with a plant-filled office, compare existing botanical artwork. For a family member with a treasured pet photograph, consider the photo-gift route. For a business using an owned logo across several workstations, start with a business inquiry.
These are selection examples, not a rule that each recipient needs a mat. A person who already loves a specialist mouse pad or lacks enough desktop space may prefer another gift.
What to check wherever you buy
Ask for the actual surface material, available dimensions and image requirements. Check whether product pictures are photographs, mockups or illustrations. Read the artwork-review process, return terms and production information separately from transit estimates. A marketplace listing and a specialist printer can both be useful sources; judge the specific seller's information and support.
For Canadian and US orders, confirm the delivery destination and displayed checkout currency. Do not infer a guaranteed arrival date from a general dispatch statement. Our Canada ordering guide explains the questions to settle before ordering.
Is custom always more expensive?
Compare current prices for the same size and destination, including any artwork charges, delivery and applicable taxes. There is no universal price relationship between custom printing and existing designs.
Can I order a size that is not listed?
The PrintMyPad builder lists 36 × 16 inches and 31.5 × 13.8 inches. Choose a listed option that fits or ask a question before ordering; do not assume an unlisted size is available.
Once the route is clear, browse existing designs or prepare your file for the custom builder.
